Star Citizen developers allegedly wasting money
Chris Roberts and his Cloud Imperium Games studio are being hit hard in a Forbes report. The article accuses the developer of incompetence and mismanagement.
Star Citizen, the great space epic of Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, is delayed, delayed and delayed. This is not news but has been known for many years. A Forbes report now raises heavy questions and charges against Roberts last week. He is blamed for "galactic scale incompetence and mismanagement ."
The article outlines the development history of the project since its public launch in 2012. Again and again, it is suggested that Roberts enriches himself personally on the project - as example, he and his wife are reported to have a house worth $4.7 million.
The criticism of mismanagement is based on the comments of 20 former employees who characterize Roberts as a "micromanager and poor resource managers". Wing Commander 4 producer Mark Day reports from his now completed development period that Roberts' "old, bad habits" have re-emerged. "It was out of control." The report names some spicy numbers. By the end of 2017, Cloud Imperium had only $ 14 million in financial reserves. The studio currently employs 537 people, according to Forbes, with salaries totaling $ 30 million a year. Forbes has also counted the previously sold spaceship models and has come to proud 135 pieces. The US Trade Commission FTC now has 129 complaints from buyers, claiming up to $ 24,000.
The implicit conclusion of the report: The game never gets finished. Roberts finally "stopped guessing when Star Citizen be ready." After all, the creator can defend himself in the report. "Star Citizen is playable," he is quoted in the article. "It has more features and content than many ready-made games." The state of development from the current Alpha we reported last week.

I think that there is at least a bit bad effect of unconditional praising from fans how great is Chris Roberts is at the start of project i read lots of articles, but great he is.. and felt that his ego is too big and he not have other skill and there is not much info about others people who are needed to be in team and have such skill. For me have was at right place in right time 25 years ago and he is still living from that, but todays development is somewhere else..

Apparently Chris Roberts either doesn't know how shitty it is to be a game developer. In all this time he could have easily released a limited but working game already. Then he could have gone on to make massive expansions to it. He could make 10 expansions if that's his thing. Maybe make a couple of first ones free for backers and sell the rest separately. But instead he's releasing nothing but hollow tech demos and big promises of a vast galaxy. Too bad that vast galaxy isn't any nearer to us than Andromeda in real life.

I think maybe he should have done SQ42 without the FPS and different planet tech and stuff then tacked on Star Citizen as an open world MMO afterward. But like creating a smaller Star Citizen and expanding it from there wouldn't look much different than it does now.

I called this a while ago, so not surprised, even a tiny bit. Stop defending this cash hog. This is probably one of the most wasteful projects ever. I was rooting for this game initially, but I eventually realized that they are just going to keep sucking cash out of everyone. Too many suckers out there.

This dev is making promises they know they can't keep and instead of admitting it and releasing a playable game, they just keep raising money and pushing the development time longer and longer. This game is never coming out as a "finished" product. My bet would be they get hit so hard with lawsuits and file bankruptcy. They'll either blame the lawsuits for having to shut down the game or never be heard from again.
