Spotted: Ryzen 3 1200 CPU with Eight Active CPU Cores Enabled

It is not the first time we see hear about something like this happening. But thus far we haven't seen it happening with a Ryzen 3 1200. There is a video floating on the web of a Russia based guy who purchased a Ryzen 3 1200, a four core sub 100 USD processor. The user, however, found his PC rather fast.

As it turns out, instead of four active CPU cores, he has eight CPU cores active. SMT towards 16 threads, however, was not active. The extra cores were not unlocked by a trick or tweak in the BIOS, it ran fully activated "out of the box".

The buyer made a video on Youtube which supports his claims with proof. CPU-Z displays eight cores and threads instead of four. The benchmark gives the Ryzen 3 1200 a significantly higher performance than it would have had with four cores.  In the Cinebench R15, the user reached around 900 opposed to the normally roughly 480 points in the multithreading test.

Users now call the unlocked Ryzen processors Lootboxes, in a positive manner :-)  Below the video of the user, called boxserg.

It appears the guy in Dresden in charge of disabling cores decided to mark this batch as done and then clocked out. :)

I think the way that AMD creates the Zen cores makes such accidents inevitable. A simple sorting issue and you have a bunch of CPUs with more cores than you bargained for (in a good way). Must be nice for the lucky few.
