Well it depends. On this generation was all about gaming. So if the 10400 is able to keep up with 3600/3600x fps is well priced.
If the 10600k is able to keep up with 3700x fps, is fine.
People won't look for extra 2 cores, since this generation is just about gaming, fps will be KPI to sell.

This is absolutely insane. I can buy a 3900x 12 core with 450EU.

Well the same answer apply. If in the tasks you want a 10700k is faster, that 4 extra core will be worth nothing.
We can pretend that intel is not able to sell cpus and that they do not know that their reputation is still mostly intact among the average consumer.
I can make you an example, if microsoft would issue now an overhaul of ie11 browser that makes it perfectly safe and web compliant, and fast, how many people will switch back from chrome in the first year? no one.
I mean non tech savvy people love intel, and tech people loved it too for years, they know how to sell their cpus and prices will work.
Or we can continue to pretend they are crazy

Way overpriced to be able to compete with AMD's price/performance.. no way they will sell like this. Expecting price drops soon.
