Sony's 98-inch 8k (ZG9 8k) television costs € 80,000 available from June

Yes, look at that topic tile again, swallow and look away. Sony has announced the availability of its ZG9 8k televisions. The two 85 and 98-inch models will be available in June for 17,000 and 85,000 euros respectively. Announced in February the ZG9 series uses 8k resolution LCD panels and full array local dimming.

These products support HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision. The screens have full array local dimming, and even at these prices Sony does not disclose how many zones are involved. According to the specifications, the maximum refresh rate at 8k resolution is 30 Hz, indicative there is no HDMI 2.1 on board whatsoever. Fun fact: Sony does not state which generation of HDMI ports have been embedded. The ZG9 is equipped with the Android TV operating system from Google.

Power consumption also is something to keep in mind, both TVs use roughly 1 kW, you should not move the TV over stairs either, the 98-inch model weighs more than a hundred kilograms.

The 85-inch ZG9 is available from the first week of June and costs € 17,000. The larger 98-inch model will be available from the second week of June and will cost € 80,000. You might want to add some deliver coasts to that figure, the total package weighs 179 kg.

Not my market I admit but I wonder if their 80K € display still uses a terrible $5 SoC for the Android TV experience..

At those sizes, it might be a good idea to invest in a projector & screen. ...I'm sure this isn't for power users, probably just people who only watch 24Hz movies, or maybe outlet stores. Because having a max refresh rate of 30Hz is insulting in 2019, 8K resolution be damned, good luck finding content to fill those pixels.
