Sony Halts producton and sales Xperia Tablet S Due to Defect

Not too long ago Sony launched their Android-based Xperia Tablet S and one of its unique features is that its water proof but the company has found out that it has gaps between screen and body which can cause damaged if tablet is exposed to water. The problem with the tablet, which is supposed to be water resistant, is the result of a manufacturing flaw at the Chinese plant where it is fabricated, based on that defect Sony has halted sales of the tablet and recalled all the units they've shipped so far. Sony has shipped around 100,000 units so far and they are calling all of them back. Company representatives also said that they'll offer free check-ups to already sold units.

This defect is reportedly caused by a flaw in manufacturing line. Sony believes that the recalling cost wouldn’t be much and it wouldn’t have a considerable impact of company’s financial outcome. The tablet runs on Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich Operating System and it’s powered by faster NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 Processor with ULP GeForce GPU and 1GB of RAM.

The Xperia Tablet S features impressive 8 megapixel back side camera with 3264 x 2448 pixel resolution, Autofocus, Touch focus, Geo-tagging, face and smile detection along with 1080p HD video recording @30fps. It also armed with 1 megapixel front facing camera for video calling and web conference along with capable of 720p HD video recording. The tablet offers 16/32/64 GB Internal Storage capabilities with Expandable 32GB Storage via MicroSD card slot.

(Reuters) - Sony Corp said it has halted sales of its Xperia tablet PCs, a month after its launch, after discovering gaps between the screen and the case that make some of the machines susceptible to water damage.

The problem with the tablet, which is supposed to be water resistant, is the result of a manufacturing flaw at the Chinese plant where it is fabricated, said Sony spokeswoman Noriko Shoji. Sony has not yet decided when it will resume sales, she added.

Sony began selling its latest Android tablet on September 7 in the United States followed by launches in Japan, Europe and elsewhere. So far it has shipped around 100,000 of the devices. The company said it will fix any of the tablets sold and expects the cost of the recall to have no significant impact on earnings.

The latest tablet from Sony, which like its smartphone has been branded Xperia in a bid to unify its mobile devices under one name, joins a crowded market for tablets that is still dominated by Apple Inc's iPad. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, with its rival Android machine, leads the pack of Apple challengers.
