SilverStone ECS07: a 5-Port SATA 3.0 Expansion Card connects to your M.2 2280 slot
SilverStone ECS07: a 5-Port SATA 3.0 Expansion Card connects to your M.2 2280 slot
Need more SATA3 ports? SilverStone introduced the M.2 2280 form factor 5-port SATA 3.0 expansion board ECS07, which looks unique.
PCI Express 3.0 (x2) bus interface, JMicron "JMB585" controller, and an aluminum enclosure and heat sink are standard features. Even when processing is carried out in which a high load state persists for an extended period of time, stable functioning is achievable. The main body measures 24.8 mm in width, 80.5 mm in depth, 10.3 mm in height, and weighs 23 g. Unfortunately, it does not support the RAID feature.

Why would something like this run hot enough to need a heatsink? Especially if (according to @wavetrex ) it has sub-par performance?

The chip does not have the large motherboard PCB to cool the chip and the module could be in a bad spot, like a CPU GPU sandwich.
It could also be for looks, it could also be needed to secure the side reinforcement brackets, that prevent the module from breaking in half during rough handling.
If the module needs metal reinforcement, might as well turn it into a heatsink.

The heatsink on mine does get warm to the touch while copying files.
I guess the JMB585 chip isn't exactly on the efficient side.
The SATA ports are quite fragile, I actually managed to break one in the last 2 years (can only use 4 out of 5 now)
Eh, cheap stuff from China, not much to expect...

I had one of these (Just not from SilverStone) for over two years now (bought from AliExpress VERY cheap, something like $20), and this one is not unique at all.
It might be "new" in Europe, since they never really penetrated the market here...
They started appearing in China very soon after JMB 585 launched, which is all the way back in 2019

However, I must say, the performance of the chip is very disappointing, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Unstable, low speed when using multiple drives at once, totally inappropriate for any kind of RAID setup or use with SATA SSDs.
Stay away.
