Silicon Motion has given a sneak peek of its latest SM2504XT mainstream PCIe 5.0 SSD controller at the Shenzhen Global Memory Industry Innovation Forum.

This new controller will feature a 7nm process and support 4 NAND channels. It is expected to hit the market in September 2023 and has lower power consumption, making it ideal for mobile devices like laptops. Meanwhile, the performance-level SM2508 PCIe 5.0 SSD controller will be built with a 12nm process, an 8-channel design, and support 3200MT/s flash memory. It will be sampled in January 2023.

AMD has announced that PCIe 5.0 SSDs were launched in November 2022, but there are currently no consumer-grade models available in the domestic market. However, the PCIe Gen 5.0 SSD from Japanese manufacturer CFD Gaming is already leading the way overseas, with a 2TB model priced at roughly 350 euro/usd. With the advancements in technology and higher speed capabilities, it is expected that more PCIe 5.0 SSDs will be launched in 2024. The choice of which SSD to buy will depend on your needs and budget, but for now, the CFD Gaming model is an early example of the technology in action.
