Shuttle XPC SH170R6 Barebone Makes an Appearance

The Shuttle XPC Barebone SH170R6 packs the 6th Generation of Intel Core desktop processors for LGA1151 socket into a small aluminium case cover with a black-brushed surface has a volume of 14 litre which is just a third of the volume of a standard Midi tower.

Despite its small dimensions, it is brimming with features. Set up a top-performer with the latest LGA1151 "Skylake" processor, a dual-slot PCI Express graphics card, M.2-SSD, two 6 TB hard disks in RAID mode and up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory, plus Blu-ray drive. However, also cost-effective configurations without dedicated graphics cards are possible, since Intel's Skylake generation offers an amazing inbuilt CPU and graphics performance with low energy consumption.

With Core™ i3/i5/i7 processors built-in graphics core, the SH170R6 is able to support 4k/Ultra HD video playback. At back panel of SH170R6 provides one HDMI and two DisplayPort to support three independent screen displays. The SH170R6 features one PCI-E x16 slot and one PCI-E x4, allowing for installation of dual slot graphics cards, video surveillance cards, RAID cards, and more applications. It also features strong expandability with one M.2 and one half-size Mini PCIe slots support for M.2 SSD and a WiFi card or other compatible modules. Equipped with Shuttle’s I.C.E 2™ cooling engine as well as 80 Plus Bronze certified with a 300W power supply, allows the SH170R6 to feature high energy efficiency and maintain high stability for long-term operation.

Shuttle XPC features stable, cool, and silent operation with Shuttle’s ICE 2 heat pipe technology. It uses convection cooling to dissipate heat away from the CPU. The ICE2 copper tubes, coated in nickel for enhanced tube hardness and rust-proof protection, are filled with distilled water to effectively channel heat and provide highly efficient processor and chassis cooling.

So the good thing about Shuttles are that they have a custom ITX+ board that has 4 DIMM sockets. Friend has several for VMs with i7-4790/k.

The bad things, you can see in the rear picture: the minuscule Power Supply fan and non-120 size CPU fan (custom heatsink/fan for you).

If the 2 DIMM slots wont kill you, build your own for less noise.

They are not super horribly loud, just not quiet like a 120mm CPU/PS fan options would be. They just keep re-using same first design because its cheaper to keep using same parts i think. And maybe for small offices, its fine.

Anyway, Silverstone SX500-LG power supply for example and any decent CPU cooling solution with user replaceable 120mm fan.
