Second-generation AMD ZEN2 To launch Next year on 7nm

In a Q1 2018 Earnings, Call Transcript AMD CEO Lisa T. Su was interviewed, she dropped a few interesting notes. AMD is hard at work on 7nm parts, the first products will sample this year already, with a pending release for Ryzen and Epyc in 2019. This is pretty much in line with Intel.

In 2017 AMD launched Ryzen (consumer) and Epyc (server) class Zen processors on 14nm. In April this year, 12nm (Zen+) was released. The next big step is a move towards 7nm (Zen2 with an updated architecture), I honestly expected 10nm to arrive first though as 7nm is a completely new technology. For 7nm AMD will be using both TSMC and GlobalFoundries.

That also means that this year, all SKUs will be based on the 12nm lineup. And yeah we do expect a 2800X at some point, as well as 12nm Zen+ Threadripper, of course.

So our foundry strategy is to use both TSMC and GLOBALFOUNDRIES on the first 7-nanometer product. We are using TSMC for that product and we have a very strong relationship with them. And so, we do see a good momentum on it from what we see, and I'm not concerned about capacity.

So all of the sales this year will be around the current generation of Ryzen, and so, that gets us to the mid-single-digit share. 7-nanometer Zen 2 based product we'll sample later this year to customers and that will be in production in 2019, and we do believe that the adoption rate of the second-generation could potentially be higher than the adoption rate of the first-generation, mostly because customers will be more familiar with our systems and our products. And so, we'll see how it goes, but we certainly – our overall goals are ambitious in the server space. And so, this year, it's first-generation Ryzen; next year, we'll mix in the 7-nanometer second-generation – I'm sorry, first-generation EPYC, and next year, we'll mix in the second-generation of the EPYC products.
