Seasonic Issues Warning: FOCUS PLUS PSU has GPU Compatibility Issues

Here's something you do not see that often, Seasonic confirmed that their FOCUS PLUS power supplies can have issues with certain graphics cards resulting in black screens under GPU stress, the issue seems related to high ripple under GPU load.

The solution is quite simple though, some modified PCIe cables with enhanced shielding make the problem go away":

FOCUS PLUS and GPU potential compatibility issues

We have been notified, in limited instances, where some issues may occur when a FOCUS power supply is used in conjunction with certain high power consumption GPU or brand of VGA cards. If you experience possible compatibility issues, please check the below information and contact us for further assistance:

FOCUS PLUS & ASUS GTX970 STRIX: In very limited instances black screen may occur under heavy VGA usage. Current testing showed that certain VGA cards may emit higher than normal ripple when under heavy load and using a modified PCIe cables with enhanced shielding resolved the issue.

FOCUS PLUS & Vega 56/64: For units with serial numbers before January 2018, in rare instances, possible system shutdown may occur when GPU is under heavy load. This is possibly caused by higher than normal peak current emitted by this particular range of GPU's when under heavy load triggering the PSU’s internal protection safety.

I know it's a little unrelated but you just made me think of it, after getting a new powersupply I got one of those power protection boards to protect my pc from electrical surge, do you have one of those? worth getting in my opinion.... it's just a 4 plug out one > pc power supply > monitor > audio > extra for whatever else...

xD

for some electrical surge it can help... those surge-protector basically using MOV to absorb the surge power
it wont help for thunder surge that over 1billion joules

anyway rather than simple MOV filter, why not get a good UPS with AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) ... it should have surge-protector also so give much better power-line

hehe thanks for your consideration guys, first I got one of those for each of my rig (gaming and HTPC), and my house has got a lightning rod (they all have here by law)

I just upgraded my system and along with other parts got a focus ssr-750fx, it's paired with my strix 1080ti. I'm gonna run some gpu benchmarks/stress tests to see how repeatable the issue is.

EDIT: Before posting I've experienced the issue three times(maybe two), once or twice when only browsing the web and using discord

Could I possibly get a link to suggested Pcie cables that may fix the issue.

Hi Johnyyy, Welcome to Guru3d! Mind me asking - You said you just upgraded - you are outside of return period?

EDIT: For reference sake below is Seasonic's Webpage on compatibility issues with this PSU including contact information. Lastly, the Seasonic Warranty page.

How to invoke my warranty?

Could I possibly get a link to suggested Pcie cables that may fix the issue.
These should work with the Seasonic FOCUS Plus according to my research.

I'm still within the return period, but I'd like to keep this psu if possible, as it's good value, good quality and similar designs(750w, full modular, etc ) are, from what I've seem, usually a bit more in price. Depending on neweggs take on the issue I may also be required to pay a restock fee.

Thanks for the links and info. I may give some different cables a try.
