Seagate's top-tier HDDs will have more capacity. The company will launch 22TB and 24TB HDDs on its latest platform in the first or second quarter. Later in the year, Seagate will release the first hard drive with heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology and a capacity of over 30TB.

According to Dave Mosley, CEO of Seagate, the company plans to launch the 30+ TB platform in the June quarter, slightly ahead of schedule. He also mentioned that the speed of the initial HAMR volume ramp will depend on a number of factors, including product yields and customer qualification timelines, but the company plans to use its systems business to quicken the pace of learning and time-to-yield. This announcement is expected to disrupt the storage industry, as it will allow for larger storage capacities in a smaller form factor.

The company is introducing 10-platter hard drives with Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) and Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technologies, featuring disk capacities of 2.2TB and a total capacity of 22TB. Additionally, Seagate will also release a shingled magnetic recording (SMR) version of the drive, which will offer a capacity of 24TB.

These new hard drives are set to replace Seagate's current top-of-the-line models, which have a capacity of 20TB for CMR/PMR drives and 22TB for SMR drives. The company's focus on refining CMR/PMR and SMR technologies is a part of their strategy to continue to offer high-capacity storage solutions, while they also invest in new technologies such as Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) to further increase capacity.
