Seagate has been talking about its 2nd generation hard disk drive platform featuring its heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology and capacities beyond 30TB for quite a while but has never disclosed when exactly it plans to launch them. This week, the business said it would deliver 30TB+ HDDs in mid-2023.

"We're well on our way to introducing 30+ TB HAMR drives," Seagate CEO David Mosley stated on an earnings call. We hope to launch HAMR-based products next year.

Seagate's 2nd generation HAMR architecture will expand hard disk capacity to 50TB and beyond. The company's plan predicts '30+TB drives' in 2023. Still, a formal shipment on December 20, 2023 might also be called '2023 availability,' therefore we're skeptical about this element of Seagate's strategy. Yet, the head of Seagate announced an actual availability timeframe for these parts.

Seagate has shipped 1st generation HAMR hard drives to select clients and within its Lyve storage systems for a time, but these products have never been widely accessible. Seagate's 2nd Gen HAMR HDDs were released last year. One catch: Customer shipments don't indicate 30TB+ HDDs are widely available in 2023. Instead, the business may provide HAMR drives to hyperscale data center operators before launching to all other consumers.
