Samsung has developed a new 980 Pro SSD type specifically for Sony's PlayStation 5 gaming console. The SSD is equipped with a heatsink that has been specifically engineered to fit inside the M.2 SSD storage expansion slot found within the PS5 computer.

In addition, Samsung will release a new 980 Pro SSD model on October 29th, with prices starting at $249.99 for the 1TB variant and $449.99 for the 2TB model. The drive has its own retail SKUs and name—"980 PRO with Heatsink"—much like Western Digital separates SKUs with and without heatsinks for its flagship WD Black SN850 drives, which are also available with or without heatsinks. The Verge reports that these drives will be offered as PlayStation 5-compatible drives, however it is unclear whether or not they will be available via retail channels.

If you intend to utilize this SSD somewhere else, Samsung specifies that its dimensions are 24mm (W), 80mm (L), and 8.6mm (H) (H). Most modern motherboards come with built-in heatsinks that should be sufficient to keep the 980 Pro running at peak performance for extended periods of time; therefore, this new heatsink option is primarily intended for PlayStation 5 owners who are looking for one of the best SSD options available right now.
