Samsung to unveil Micro-Led TV Technology at CES 2018
Samsung Electronics is expected to showcase micro-LED based TVs next year. Micro LED is considered as next generation display technology. With this new lineup, Samsung plans to increase its technological competitiveness while targeting the top premium TV market.
The idea is to gain television sets for a home-cinema experience and reportedly will showcase a 150" TV model. Currently the technology is already used in cinemas. Micro LED is attracting attention as a next-generation display technology next to liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light emitting diode (OLED) because it can lower power consumption, be smaller and is lightweight compared to existing materials.
The same technology that Samsung used for its 4K resolution cinema LED has been applied but smaller, the report said, and the model is aimed at the home theatre market. Apple is also reportedly working with Taiwan chip giant TSMC to develop Micro LED displays. Making LED smaller is difficult. Micro LED displays have LEDs smaller than 100 micrometres, with each LED chip acting as a pixel. If realised, Micro LED displays will consume less power and won't have burn-in problems like OLED. If a plastic substrate is used, it can also be used for flexible displays.
Next, to Samsung, Apple is also working on micro-LED panels, however, to integrate into their smartwatch.

And it'll be so expensive for the next five years itll most likely fall to the wayside by then. Hows their "Quatnum Dot" working out in comparison to OLED...... Yeah not good. So its a bit brighter, but they dont need to be much brighter as opposed to having better black levels....
I see this tech being quite a few years out from real consumerism and by that time OLED will have cornered the market for sure!
I agree.. I'll keep my Plasma with 3D.. No reason to buy a new tv.

I still don't really see a huge benefit of buying a new tv. I have a 46" Samsung from probably 5-6 years ago. It still looks great, it's 120 "hz", it's 1080p. Cable still isn't above 1080i yet. IIRC most of it is 720p.

granted to all above commentary that it will be expensive and limited release first 3-5 years, but the tail always wags the dog in tech
