Samsung Releases FreeSync Firmware Update on four 2018 televisions

Samsung Releases FreeSync Firmware Update on four 2018 televisions

If you have bought a 2018 model Samsung UHDTV (Q6FN, Q7FN, Q8FN, Q9FN, NU8000), and would like to make use of FreeSync through a PC or Xbox S or One X, it's now possible. A new firmware is out, bringing Freesync support towards four models.

The firmware update has build number 1103 and is available for the models Q6FN, Q7FN, Q8FN, Q9FN and NU8000. Over time you'll be automatically updated if not then go into the menu and you can force a manual firmware check, which should spot and install v1103.

The new update brings FreeSync support towards these TVs, offering a variable refresh rate, and thus more stutter free + tearing-free gaming experience. These Samsung models have a true 120Hz refresh rate, making this possible, there is one remark though, FreeSync only gets supported at 1920x1080p (Full HD), ergo it is not (yet) working with Ultra HD. Freesync support for Samsung TVs was announced in April. The televisions can show a refresh rate of 120 Hz with the update, although this is only possible at 1080p resolution. The function is not available at 4k. I have yet to check it out myself, but the new update might have brought HDMI 2.1 support as well.

Samsung also further reduced input lag on its 2018 TVs, down to 15ms in the game mode. It is expected to be “less than 7 ms” in VRR mode. In addition, Samsung would implement ‘Fast FRC’ (frame rate compensation), allowing users to use Samsung’s motion compensation system together with a game console for an average of 24ms input lag. Fast FRC is supported by the NU8000 and the 2018 “QLED” LCDs.

Big format game displays are going to be a big thing for PC users. Nvidia need to get their act together and make Gsync free. Otherwise Freesync will continue to gain more traction and its going to hurt Nvidia when users take into account both the GPU and display when buying or upgrading.

^Yup, 100% true^

+ That is already happening :p
I want smooth gameplay, i don't care if i have 95-145FPS no G-sync -> i go for 80-120FPS FreeSync
It's no brainer -> kids are clever :rolleyes:

Doubt it. Even if technically feasible, I think Samsung would prefer you to buy their new 2018 TVs.
