Samsung invests 16 billion euros in new chip factories
Samsung has been fabbing two new manufacturing plants for chips. The new plant on Pyeongtaek has started mass producing the first chips, that one did cost almost 12 billion and will focus on the production of Samsung’s fourth-generation V-NAND (64 layers).
In addition, Samsung’s plans to construct a second semiconductor fabrication line in Xi’an, China, site are also under review. Samsung’s first semiconductor fabrication line in Xi’an was constructed in 2014 and is presently in full operation.
- By 2021, Samsung will invest a total of 16 Billion euros into its current Pyeongtaek line to expand its semiconductor fabrication capacity
- Samsung also plans to invest 5 Billion in its Hwaseong, South Korea, site for a semiconductor fabrication line optimized to install state-of-the-art infrastructure including Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) equipment
- Samsung Display is reviewing plans to establish a new OLED manufacturing site in Asan, South Korea, by 2018
With the new investments, Samsung aims to strengthen its global fabrication network and accelerate the overall development of the IT industry.
Although Samsung is best known for its smartphones, tablets and TVs, the company earns bigtime with its chip production facilities. In the first quarter of 2017 this branch accounted for over three quarters of operating profit.

yep prices need to drop
i'm still on 2tb ssd samsung, bought 2 years ago at 540€, price barely moved since then ^^
I bought a 960mb ssd on sale last year for $165 u.s. 440/460 speed and going strong. Works great for my needs. I always wait for a sale on a certain website, no free advertising sorry, but a hint would be what a bird does in a nest :]. 14 billion on a factory, that's twice the national gdp for Turkmenistan lol. Don't expect to see ssd prices to drop after they plunked down 14 billion. They will want to recover their investment, and it will be on the backs of us the consumer.
