Samsung has unveiled its Dolby Vision-compatible gaming technology as an alternative to Dolby Vision. It includes VRR, HDR auto-calibration, and low latency tone-mapping being supported by a new HDR10+ Gaming extension that will be available in 2022.

The Xbox Series S/X is the first gaming console to support Dolby Vision with software updates for various TVs up to 4K and 120 Hz. This was tested in practice and compared to traditional HDR10. Now Samsung intends to add a gaming extension to the HDR10 + competition format.

The new HDR10+ Gaming extension will be built on three pillars:
  • VRR (Variable Refresh Rates)
  • Automated HDR Calibration
  • Low Latency Source Tone Mappings

HDR10 + Gaming was announced for 2022 at the Samsung Developer Conference 2021. So it will work with VRR anti-tearing technology and 4K at 120 Hz. The HDR tone mapping is also near-latency-free, which is vital for fast-paced FPS games. Because real-time HDR optimization is always carried out in the background, gamers in HDR10 + gaming should no longer have to worry about image settings or calibration wizards. In the meanwhile, it's unclear whether existing HDR10 + TVs can be updated with the gaming expansion via firmware or if new TVs with the technology must be acquired. Of course, game developers and system makers should support HDR10+ gaming.
