Samsung 850 Pro Series SSD with 3D V-NAND Technology
Samsung launched the 850 PRO, a new solid state drive (SSD) line-up featuring Samsung's cutting-edge three-dimensional (3D) vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory technology. The new Samsung 850 PRO, unveiled at the 2014 Samsung SSD Global Summit in Seoul, offers a new breed of performance for solid state drives and will be available globally across 53 markets from this month.
Based on Samsung's proprietary V-NAND technology, the new 850 PRO is ideal for use in high-end PCs and workstations. Samsung's V-NAND features a proprietary vertical cell structure and represents a breakthrough in overcoming the density limit currently facing planar NAND architecture used in conventional flash memory, yielding significant speed, endurance and energy efficiency improvements.
The Samsung 850 PRO delivers blazing-fast speeds and exceptional endurance, offering the highest level of performance among SSDs using the SATA III (6Gb/s) interface. Its sequential read performance reaches up to 550 megabytes per second (MB/s), with write performance of up to 520MB/s. Random read performance is up to 100,000 input/output operations-per-second (IOPS), with write speeds of up to 90,000 IOPS.
The drive also offers a Dynamic Thermal Guard feature, which maintains ambient temperature while operating and prevents potential data loss from overheating. The Samsung 850 PRO will be available in 128 gigabyte (GB), 256GB, 512GB and 1 terabyte (TB) storage capacities. With the accelerating consumer adoption of SSDs, Samsung anticipates that its new V-NAND SSDs will add to the growth of the branded SSD market with its outstanding performance.
The 850 Pro Series will be in stores the 21st of July - 129 dollar for 128GB, 199 dollar for 256GB, 399 dollar for 512GB and 699 dollar for de 1TB-version.
That's 120, 180, 360 and 630 EURO depending on local taxes, Samsung offers a 10-year warranty on the SSDs.

People keep forgetting most other SSD manufacturers don't have to recoup R&D costs for the NAND chips. The technology used in other SSD's have been around a while and the costs have been paid off. Also, as technology matures it becomes cheaper to make through tweaks and improvements. You pay more for higher tech stuff, SSD's are no different.

I don't think anyone is 'forgetting' the R&D costs.
For me it translates into 'am I going to notice a huge difference by spending twice as much money on a Samsung SSD over a Crucial' for example?
Simple answer, no.
Sure I can run AS SSD all day long and be super duperly impressed that the Samsung shows better numbers but the difference in price is too high to justify the outlay for that privilege.
Crucial are doing the right thing at the moment by trying to get SSDs to a price point where everyone can enjoy the advantages.
On top of that Samsung don't have power loss protection which is a deal breaker for me and one of the main reasons I always buy Crucial drives as that has saved me an RMA on two separate occasions.
Samsung have every right to recoup their R&D costs but charging twice as much (or more) for a comparable drive is not only greedy, it's stupid.
Of course, it's no secret that Samsung has slowly been turning into Apple for quite some time now.
Idiotic premiums because it has Samsung written on the box.
I don't care for Apple doing it and I don't care for Samsung's attempts either.

Their PRO lineup is not meant to compete with these drives. The EVO lineup does that currently.

It's not even being sold yet. The MSRP for the 512GB 840 Pro is $570 but you can buy one for $380 on amazon.
Also I'm pretty confident that Samsung knows how to price things competitively. If they are priced as high as they are obviously someone values the write duration enough for make the price justified.
Maybe you are correct. They are probably pricing these drives because of this 3D-V-NAN Technology.
