Report: Shipments of PC GPUs drop 35% from the same time last year to Q4 2022
New data reveals that the fourth quarter of 2022 saw a 35% YoY decrease in PC GPU shipments. This can be attributed to the declining demand for personal computers, which resulted in a sales decline of CPUs in the same period.
As most client systems feature integrated graphics, the sales of GPUs also dropped. The research estimates that 64.2 million discrete and integrated GPUs in total were sold in the last quarter, representing a 15.4% decline sequentially and a 38% decrease YoY.
While Nvidia launched expensive GPUs in the form of the GeForce RTX 4080 and 4090, AMD introduced its Radeon RX 7900 XT/XTX boards very late in the quarter. Sales of discrete desktop GPUs did not grow significantly compared to the previous quarter. Furthermore, shipments of notebook GPUs declined by 43% in Q4 2022, while sales of desktop GPUs dropped by 24% quarter-over-quarter.
Intel experienced the most significant decline in both CPU and GPU sales during the period, reflecting the fact that it is the world's largest processor supplier. Despite this, it maintained its position as the world's largest GPU vendor with a 71% market share. Nvidia came in second with a 17% share, while AMD's share remained at around 12%, a historical low for the company. AMD and Nvidia were able to slightly increase their market share from Q3 at Intel's expense.
Jon Peddie, president of JPR, said, "This quarter's total graphics processor shipments (integrated/embedded and discrete) decreased an astounding -15.3% from the previous quarter, contributing to a decline in the historical 10-year average rate of 6.8%. A total of 64 million units were shipped in the quarter, which was a decrease of -38.5 million units from the same quarter a year ago, indicating the GPU market is negative on a year-to-year basis."

But why would they? We're not talking insulin here, but rather a luxury entertainment product.
They are living the dream, but if anyone needs to wake up it's the gamers.
Gamers certainly don't need to wake up and buy 3 grands GPU to play games. They can just turn around and buy a console or steam deck and be done with it.
In the past many pc enthusiasts refused to use consoles largely due to the graphics. The increasinly high cost of gaming pc ownership and the latest generation of consoles that are starting to run 4k have certainly shifted the balance.
For many people it's a matter of budget and a console is king. I can buy a PS5 or XboxX and OLED TV for less than what it costs to build a pc with monitor for 4k. Yes, the PC 4k result have superior results over a console now but a 4k gpu is quite expnesive and out of reach for most of us.
I do personally prefer a pc for gaming. I do also have an X Box S that is only 1440p and cost a little over $250. The visual quality on a 55" 4K Quantum Dot Hisense TV is utterly outstanding. And it plays really smooth too. Utterly impressed with the X Box S. That's coming from a guy that played on the first Atari home console

The PC enthusiast market will exist as long as companies can make a buck. It's not going to die alhtough it may change in ways we can't imagine just yet due to the increasing power of cpu's and gpu's.
If you look at game sales over the last 20 years it is a market that continues to grow.
There's also the fact that most of those new GPUs are not good enough for what they are sold for (ray tracing and/or 4k). The whole PC gfx advantage starts to fall apart when you start using interpolation and upscaling to run games at 60fps. I'd have not too much problem paying ~1 grand for a gpu capable of doing real ray tracing at 4k. But even the 4090 is struggling at doing that in half assed rt games and it's over 2 grands in Canada.

The market is growing but more in a democratic way than what it used to be. Minecraft and Terraria are two of the best selling games on PC of the last 20 years and both of them can run on a phone. When you look at popular games in the last couple of years you see lot of games that can run on anything. Back in the days when a new Engine was launching it was launching with a game nobody could run. People wanted to upgrade their PC to play this demo. Now nobody i know give a flying **** and play Fall Guys, Fortnite or Valheim.

Sorry but you just cant buy console and be done with it. Its the same as buying a motorcycle becouse you dont have money to buy a car. Its not the same.
I would just rather walk then.

No it's not the same but at one point when something is too expensive you have to take a decision. Your analogy would work better if you would compare buying a car versus taking the bus. Many people take the bus cause they don't have enough money to buy a car. I personally know two persons who skipped the past two generations because of the price. One of the two bought a Steam Deck and the other one decided to wait to upgrade his 1080p monitor and he plays new games without RT.
