Red Dead Redemption 2 requires 150GB of free space on PS4
It's not every day that we write about a console game, however, we noticed something with Red Dead Redemption 2 that I found baffling as Red Dead Redemption 2 requires about 149GB of free space on the PS4 to be installed.
The game itself takes 99GB and with installation, without a disc the game requires 50GB extra. For the Xbox One, the required space is 107GB, Rockstar writes on a support page.

That is bat-dropping crrrrraaazy. Red Dead Redemption 2 will appear on October 26th. The game is the sequel to Western game Red Dead Redemption from 2010. In it, players like John Marston went through a story as they explored the United States and Mexico.

To me, the size of the game isn't the problem. My personal gripe is how you have to basically use up the same amount of disk space regardless of whether you do a digital DL or use the Blu Ray. And I'm sure that if you get the disc, you're going to have to keep it in the console in order to play the game. As far as I'm concerned, if you're required to have a disc, you might as well use it to free up as much space on the internal storage as possible. In doing so, you'd shave off a lot of time in prepping the game before being able to play it, you'd save a lot of disk space, and (if done properly) it'll actually improve load times, since the game can read from 2 different data sources simultaneously. The vast majority of the game's data is stuff that won't be replaced by updates, so a lot of that could be loaded on the disc. Maybe some resources (like high-res textures) would be best stored on the internal storage, since loading that from a disc would take too long.
But whatever. Not my problem - the last consoles I owned were a Sega Genesis and Gameboy Color.
Current consoles don’t actually read any data from the disc as you play these days because the read speeds on the Blu Ray optical drives are terrible, they just install the content straight off the disc and then use the disc to authenticate the install when you play the game.
Download size doesn’t bother me so much as I have a 4TB external drive on my PS4 and decent fibre connection, I do have friends with slow internet that are really going to have a rough time with this however.

$100 for a 1TB SSD, I (personally) do not have a problem with the whole 'storage' argument.
This is, of course, if you have a PS4 - which Sony made very very very very very very easy to upgrade/change the provided HDD with one that rocks the casbah.

This is a result of the additional disc space available on BD-ROM.
As was the case in the past, they utlize as much of the disc space as possible. ie they try to fit the game onto 1 disk. which these days is 100gb for bdxl , coupled with the fact games are installed to harddrive lately, means the contents can be more compressed than previously.
thats how you get a 150gb install.
of course this strategy doesn't account for downloaded copies, which means a fun wait time those who dowmload.
if i recall RAGE by id software had 1TB of uncompressed/unpotimized assets in development, which can give some perspect as to how big these projects can be pre-optimization/compression.
