Radeon RX 570 with 16GB of graphics memory spotted
Yeah, I had to check that twice as well. But as it turns out, Sapphire has released a Radeon RX 570 with 16GB GDDR5 graphics memory. The product seems to be based on the Nitro+ design.
So the 16 GB is certainly not needed for any kind of gaming, you could, of course, argue that in ultra HD some games could pass 8GB, but really this card is not fast enough. So why a 16GB version then? Well, mining is the answer here. As it turns out
ASIC miners using hat is called the Cuckoo Cycle algorithm benefits from such big memory values and can utilize between 5.5 and 11 Gigabytes of memory. A lunch/availability date has not been confirmed yet, neither is the price known.

This is so... dumb. I could maybe understand a 590 with this much memory, but even then, 12GB seems overkill.
Considering the profit margins of AIBs, I don't know who thought this was worth it, especially now that crypto mining has mostly lost everyone's interest.

despite crypto's black eye, there are untold billions of crypto out there. and someone is going to mine it.
this is a freak card that was probably designed before the crash.
but honestly they should've been making mining specific cards for a while.

They just have too much old GDDR5 chips remaining so they waste them on a 16gb model.

you could run those fancy 50gb "UHD" texture packs that some games offer as DLC, but then with such a relatively huge buffer bandwidth probably becomes a choking point for such a card
honestly if it doesnt add like 50% more in pricing I always take the bigger memory so thats one less setting to worry about, just use ultra or whatever is the highest

But why would you settle for high when you can have ultra?
