QNAP TVS-x73 series NAS is AMD powered and powerful

QNAP partnered once more with AMD for the TVS-x73 NAS series. The NAS is fitted with an AMD Embedded RX-421BD quad-core APU, these have a 2.10 GHz base and up-to 3.40 GHz boost paired with up-to 64GB DDR4 RAM.

The units are also available in 8GB and 16GB version. All of them come with dual M.2 SATA 6Gb/s SSD functionality and offer strong performance. This powerful NAS would be capable of performing almost 1200 MB/s on throughput over 10GbE and even close to 1700 MB/sec over paired dual 10GbE. It also has dual HDMI outputs with  hardware-assisted 4K video decoding and encoding acceleration.

The TVS-873 is powered by an AMD embedded Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) that incorporates exceptional CPU and AMD Radeon™ R7 Graphics performance, delivering a high-performance and energy-efficient NAS solution. Built with a state-of-the-art metal design and topped off with a stylish gold finish, the TVS-873 features a powerful quad-core CPU, AES-NI hardware encryption engine, up to 64GB RAM, USB 3.1 (10Gbps) and 10GbE expandability with exceptional performance. Coupled with the unique USB QuickAccess, HDMI 4K output, and 4K H.264 video decoding and encoding acceleration, the TVS-873 running on the new 64-bit QTS 4.3 operating system provides an optimum audiovisual experience and well-rounded private cloud system.

  • NAS and iSCSI-SAN (IP-SAN) unified storage solution
  • Integrated Radeon™ R7 GPU for 4K video storage and playback
  • 10GbE-expandable, highly-efficient storage solution for virtualization and HD video editing & sharing
  • USB QuickAccess port for accessing files without needing a network connection
  • M.2 SSD cache and Qtier technology jointly realize optimized storage efficiency
  • Supports virtualization, centralized storage, backup, sharing, and disaster recovery
  • QmailAgent for centralized email management; Qsirch full-text searching tool; Qcontactz for centrally storing and managing contacts
  • Use the NAS as a PC with exclusive QvPC Technology and 4K display
  • The new QVR Pro surveillance system allows dedicated storage space for surveillance data in the NAS, and leverages the advantages of storage manageability from the QTS.
  • Build a personal karaoke system with high-quality audio output using the OceanKTV app

The TVS-873 is equipped with a next-gen AMD R-Series RX-421BD quad-core 2.1 GHz APU (burst up to 3.4 GHz), dual channel 8GB/16GB/64GB DDR4 RAM (upgradable to 64GB), and four Gigabit LAN ports for lightning-fast multi-tasking with low power consumption and is capable of delivering up to 1,055 MB/s throughout with a 10GbE configuration. The TVS-873’s hardware-accelerated encryption engine with AES-NI provides unmatched encryption performance in its class (up to 479 MB/s with AES 256- bit full NAS volume encryption) to boost system performance, security, and ensuring the safety of sensitive business data stored in the NAS.

Did they run out of cool features to talk about? I don't know if this is going to be a seller of a such a high end device.

Well... potentially it could. It can run VM machines and it has an R7 GPU so... yep!

I don't get it - who is this targeting? It's a media NAS but it has features that no media receivers can utilize (like 10Gbps Ethernet). You're basically just buying a PC that is even more limited than a XB1 or PS4. If you can replace the OS with your own, you might as well have just bought a regular PC (and paid less as a result). It has features that, even if the Ethernet bandwidth could be saturated, would not be used. Such as M.2 - what's the point of having 64GB of RAM when you need a SSD for cache too? I'd rather spend that money toward a handful of SSDs in RAID.

Also, why did they stop there? They implemented all these features, made something that is probably going to cost well over $1500 (without even being fully equipped...) and yet they went with AMD? I'm not complaining - clearly AMD made something that was good enough. But Nvidia specializes in embedded devices and Intel likely would've had something more power efficient. But, good for AMD I guess, I'm glad they got the contract.
