According to various sources from Korea, Samsung will not be the only one, Sony as well, will be releasing QD-OLED televisions in the near future. Samsung would introduce its QD-OLED televisions at CES 2022. It will feature "brighter and broader color expression," deep blacks, fast reaction, and wide viewing angles.

QD-OLED will also offer "deeper and broader color expression," according to Samsung Display. It also helps to alleviate visual discomfort. In their explanation, the business explains that a 'blue self-luminescence' layer (which can be either OLED or microLED) generates blue light, the strength of which can be controlled down to the pixel level. Current displays such as LCD and LG's WOLED employ color filters to convert blue light to red and green (for RGB pixels), however quantum dot color converters are used in two of the sub-pixels to convert blue light to red and green (for RGB pixels).

Samsung Display compares QD-OLED to LCD – such as current the Samsung "Neo QLED" or "QLED" LCD TVs – highlighting the advantages of self-emitting display technology.

- "Conventional displays limit screen brightness because of light source or power consumption issues. With the backlight unit as the light source, it is almost impossible for LCDs to control the brightness of each individual pixel, limiting their ability to show you perfect blacks on screen. Unlike LCDs, the blue light source of the QD display can control the light source of each individual pixel. QD displays with 4K resolution has about 8.3 million (3840x2160) light sources that can be controlled separately," said Samsung Display.

Samsung Display, the panel manufacturer, detailed its QD-OLED technology in August so it is no big surprise to hear that Samsung Electronics is planning to launch the first QD-OLED TVs. Korean reports 'confirmed' it earlier this year and here is another one claiming that they will be unveiled at CES.

- "Samsung Electronics is adding QD display (QD-OLED) TVs to its 2022 TV lineup. It will be supplied with QD panels from Samsung Display from December and will show QD TVs for the first time at CES2022 and 'First Look' to be held in January next year. The release date is targeted for the first quarter of 2022," IT Chosun reported earlier this month.

It is a little more surprising to hear that Sony will also launch QD-OLED TVs, according to multiple reports from Korea, even though it is not the first time we hear about Sony's (plus TCL and Panasonic's) interest in the technology.

- "Sony, which conducted conformance tests until recently, decided that there is a possibility of commercializing QD-OLED, and decided to make QD-OLED TV. It is expected that Samsung Display's QD-OLED panel will be supplied to Sony as early as mid-November," Chosun Biz reported last month.

- "Sony, the third-largest player in the TV industry, will also release their QD OLED TV models," Business Korea reported yesterday.

- "(Samsung Electronics) will start mass production this month and supply it to Samsung Electronics and Sony. Samsung Electronics and Sony plan to make and release TVs with QD displays," ETnews reported earlier this month.
