PlayStation 4 to support external hard drives

PlayStation 4 to support external hard drives

A wish of many has been granted. PlayStation 4 console will allows users to store games on an external storage medium. PS4 System Software Update 4.50 invokes this new option. The new software update has been made available this Friday for testers. The 4.5 update will be released for everyone at a later stage with a date to be announced later.

Sony just posted this info on their playstation blog. Normally games on the PlayStation 4 can only be installed on the built-in hard disk. Users who wanted more storage space, had to replace the internal storage unit with a bigger version. According to Sony the PlayStation 4 supports hard drives with up to 8TB storage. All games and save games can be stored on it.

Starting today, those of you selected for our beta program will get an early peek at some of the new features coming to PS4 with our next major system software update, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke). If you signed up for the beta and were chosen, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Even if you’re not participating in the beta, we still wanted to give you a quick glance of the key features that will be rolling out with this update. We’re refining the user interface of PS4 even further, and adding highly requested features like external HDD support and custom wallpapers.

External HDD Support

It’s easy to upgrade the HDD that came with your PS4, but if you’re still looking for more storage space on the console, we’ve got you covered. With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilà, you now have more space on the console. This is compatible with HDDs up to 8TB in size. You can download and install applications directly to your extra storage, and the saved contents are easily manageable through the settings menu. Also, all the applications saved in the external HDD will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen so it’s easy to keep track of what apps you launched recently.

A boost mode has also been uncovered for PS4 Pro allowing it to run base PS4 games at smoother framerates http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-ps4-pro-boost-mode-makes-standard-ps4-games-run-more-smoothly

Not possible, because PS4 is known to run everything at 1080p 60fps. /sarcasm

Both nice additions. Icing on the cake would be if they could somehow allow full 1080p for titles that run below this. Probably not possible due to UI and asset etc problems. 30 to 60fps would be great as well.

While this is great and all. Why has it taken 3+ years for this to come out on PS4?

Not defending it, but with the PS3 and PS4 you could always replace the hard drive yourself. In the PS3's problem though, USB 2.0 ports aren't fast enough for game storage...

But external is always more convenient.

Because Sony isn't really a software-oriented company.
