Pioneer Launches DM for Archive Marked BDR-WX01DM Blu-Ray Recorder - last at least 100 years
Pioneer's latest optical disc drive, the BDR-WX01DM, is the first in the industry to meet the stringent JIS X6257 standards for both disc quality and recording methods, qualifying it to carry the DM for Archive mark.
This is a key feature as it assures users of the recording quality and durability of the discs, making it more reliable than other inexpensive optical disc drives for PCs.
The BDR-WX01DM boasts highly reliable motors and durable mechanical systems that contribute to its robust design. Additionally, its dust shield structure protects it from environmental contaminants, further enhancing its durability. It connects to the host PC using a USB 3.0 Type-A interface and offers maximum writing speeds of 12x for BD-R, 16x for DVD-R, and 40x for CD-R media. The ODD is also compatible with M-Disc media, which is renowned for its durability, promising a lifespan of up to 1,000 years.
What sets this product apart is its ability to record data using an X6257-compliant method, supported by the bundled DM Archiver application. This not only guarantees the quality of the recording but also provides an option to encrypt files and check recording quality.
In line with the Electronic Book Preservation Act, Pioneer has also launched new BD-R discs and a companion Blu-ray burner that promise to keep records for at least 100 years. These new discs are expected to last significantly longer than traditional BD-Rs, which typically have a lifespan of only 5 to 20 years. While rewritable BD-RE discs last longer, approximately 20 to 50 years, CDs and DVDs have an even shorter lifespan of 50 to 100 years.
To ensure the longevity of the new discs, Pioneer has developed a special burner that complies with the JIS X6257 standard. It not only allows for burning discs but also offers the option to encrypt files and check the quality of the burned media. The BDR-WX01DM Blu-ray recorder, priced at 60000 yen (approximately 465 euros) including VAT, offers a reliable solution for those looking to preserve data for the long term. A set of three BD-R discs with a 25 GB capacity costs 2350 yen (about 19 euros).
