Storage controller specialist Phison has been showing a number of SSD controllers at CES. Interestingly there are two new NVMe controllers spotted, the PS5012-E12, a high-end market and the E8 for more mainstream NVMe SSDs. The company also is demoing two Thunderbolt 3 controllers

The Phison PS5012-E12 will be a new high-end NVMe controller that will follow up the E7 series. NVMe, as well as PCI-Express 3.0x4, are obviously supported and that means performance as the new controller offers sequential speeds of up to 3200 MB/s and get this, a 3000 MB/s for writes is possible.

The random read and write speed IOPS are fairly staggering as well and listed as 600k IOPS, far higher than anything Samsung has available in the consumer market.

More mainstream would be the Phison E8 and E8T controllers which are tied to an x2 PCIe Gen 3.0 lane configuration, again intended as NVMe storage. The E8 is a DRAM cache supporting controller, the E8T is intended for the ones that will not need a DRAM cache buffer. An interesting fact is that the E8T will the Host Memory Buffer feature in the NVMe 1.3 protocol to compensate for the lack of memory and this can cache from say your system memory.

These units could reach 1600 MB/s and 1000 MB/s sequential writes. Random IOPS are listed at are at 230k and 180k 4k. For mainstream good stuff, as it still is way faster than your normal SATA3 SSD of course.

Phison also will release Thunderbolt 3 SSDs controllers. The new Thunderbolt 3 controllers utilize themselves though PCI-E 3.0 x4. Portable SSDs tired to the new controller could, in theory, achieve 2500 MB/s and faster numbers.
