Owners of Freesync Monitors can enlarge Hz range with simple hack

Owners of Freesync Monitors can enlarge Hz range with simple hack

One of the negative dependencies for AMDs FreeSync is that you are tied and limited towards the operational range in Hz the monitor is capable off. A new tool, let's call it driver mod allows you to change the parameters so you can enlarge the FreeSync range. Users in our forums report this to be working.

The hack was published last month already, yet we are seeing increased interest in it so here's a little guide. By all means this is experimental. Now the procedure is a tad technical, but you need to download the following tools:

  • Phoenix EDID Designer
  • EnTech Monitor Asset Manager
  • EnTech softMCCS

Here's what you need to do step for step (screenshot courtesy of OC_Burner). First you extract the EDID infomation into a file:

Then EDID modification #1:

Then EDID modification #2:

Monitor.inf driver creation:

Adding newly created driver range info:

Deactivate Windows Driver signature:

Install monitor driver:

Enjoy the changed dynamic  range ... We have seen users report framerates as low as 33 Hz supported.

Okay, cool hack, but there must be a reason behind the limits that manufacturers puts into each model, right? I'm perfectly happy with the 35-90hz my MG279Q provides so I'll stick to that :)

This isn't that complicated... it's just in-depth.

A little older, but still good. My BenQ XL2730Z seems to work with 32-144 Hz, only Monitor Range Limits are on Descriptor Block 3.

Edit: Original Source is the 3DCenter forum as far as I know.

I tried following this guide for my LG 29UM67 and I got an error on the final install process. It says "One of the installers for this device cannot perform the installation at this time." I then got an INF file used by another 29UM67 user whom had success, but I got the same error using that file as well. Is anyone else getting this?
