We have talked about this before. From 1 January 2020 manufacturers can make use logo for 8K TV, if their devices meet just the right requirements.

The first TVs with 8K resolution are already on the market, but there was no official standard. It will only be possible to advertise the televisions with the new badge for 8K-TV starting 1st of January 2020 and onwards. 8K resolution is 4 times 4K / UHD resolution.8K resolution is 4 times 4K / UHD resolution.

In addition to the resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels and refresh rates of 24p, 30p or 60p a minimum screen brightness of 600 cd/m² is implied. In addition, it was already known that the codec supports HEVC (h.265) and an HDMI 2.1 connection must be present. What's new is the information that the TV must display 10-bit color and support the main features of HDR. HDCP 2.2 content protection must be present as well.

For other values such as color space, black level, chroma, other HDR-Specs or white balance, there are no special requirements. This means that even some of the available devices are already 8K standard compliant, although they are not allowed to wear a logo until the beginning of 2020.

Members of the 8K Association include Samsung, Panasonic, Samsung Display, Hisense, TCL, Intel and Tencent.
