NVIDIA's GT300 yields pretty bad ?

by Hilbert Hagedoorn on: 09/16/2009 11:06 AM | source: | 0 comment(s)

Guru3D.com ImageAaah, so many rumors -- which we tend not to take surious as well are not that kind of website.

This one is just too interesting though, so allow me to be a gossip queen for once. There's this rumor that NVIDIA's GT300 (upcoming GPU for their high-end graphics cards) is yielding really bad.

As the rumor goes a short while ago TSMC produced four GT300 wafer samples. It is reported that first batch of four 300mm wafers only had seven valid GT300 chips.

To get an idea -- there are 104 GT300 GPU chips per wafer. 7/(4x104)=0.01682 So that's 1.7% of working chips. Good yields should be about 50% -20%.

Assuming this is the 40nm node, which we believe it is, it seems TSMC has got aquite a challenge ahead of itself. Hopfully this can be improved soon.

But then again, this is a rumor at best and nothing else.
