Nvidia Volta going for 12nm?

Nvidia Volta going for 12nm?

First signs of the upcoming nVIDIA flagship GPU codenamed Volta already appeared a while ago with PCI device ID is 1D81 = Graphics Device [GV100], from the latest rumors Nvidia would be going 12nm with Volta.

Volta ladies and gents is a next-gen Nvidia series, perhaps still due for 2017 but not expected until maybe Q3/Q4?. Initially Volta was to be a 10nm part, however there have been numerous indications that Voltage would be done at 16nm FinFET. The latest rumor is a 12nm released.

Digitimes now reports that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has landed orders for high performance computing (HPC) chips for AI applications from Nvidia and Qualcomm, respectively, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

TSMC will fabricate Nvidia's next generation Volta GPU using a 12nm process, said the paper, which added that the Volta GPU will be paired with Nvidia's Xavier supercomputer chips for self-driving car applications.

High end Volta will get HBM2 memory and we know HBM2 is going to available anytime soon.

It would be good if AMD got Vega out before Volta is released. I reckon Nvidia is actually annoyed by the lack of competition. Now they can't compare their upper products to anything but their own past upper products. Like 1080Ti can't be compared to anything but 1080, showing how Nvidia beats Nvidia...

AMD being a paper tiger can only sustain the situation for so long. If AMD doesn't get its stuff together, we will face the same situation in the GPU market as we did in the CPU market, meaning we will see practically no development for a long time.

well if it is only going to be 12nm I can not see much of a boost in performance they have been relying to much on the clock to get the FPS up on previous Gen cards.
Looks like 1080TI`s will be doing well for sometime to come.

I doubt Nvidia is annoyed by the lack of competition, but i agree that AMD must step up it's GPU game .

Now on the Volta aspect, i'm happy that rumors already started,it's easier for me to stay away from the 1080 ti. Can't wait for more info.

It would be good if AMD got Vega.....

Actually i don´t think there can be same situation with GPU as it is (was) with CPU. I mean, mainstream - enthusiast CPUs lack any kind of...need for more power. Aplications are the same, mostly you are good with 4/8 c/t for gaming. And that´s it.

But with GPU market, there is a bit difference in case of needing a power.
Higher, more advanced games, higher resolution and VR, those are the outer influences that push NVIDIA, those influences provide a need for more power, therefore NVIDIA even though AMD would have bancrupt, could never afford a situation as Intel could.
And the last named, VR is the main reason why GTX 1000 series are far more advanced then GTX 900 series... NVIDIA had no competition from the AMD side, yet GTX 1000 series are highly advanced, their power is at maximum possible (nearly) and with no AMD competition.

So, gaming, resolution, VR, these factors will provide a sustainable need for more power.... BUT i hope that VEGA will be succesfull, so next time i would be writing, "Gaming, resolution, VR, AMD, these factors will chase NVIDIA´s engineers for higher advanced Graphic Cards"

Dammit I can't decide to go for a 1080Ti now or wait for Volta 1180
