Nvidia has announced the release of a new GPU driver that allows users with RTX 30 and 40 series video cards to utilize RTX Video Super Resolution (VSR). VSR is a technique that leverages the Tensor cores of the 3D chip to upscale video in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

This new driver update makes it possible for users with 1440p or 4k screens to enjoy VSR, which can enhance images with a resolution of 1080p or less. The new driver update also supports all popular streaming services such as Prime Video, Netflix, and HBO Max as well as Twitch, and YouTube. Nvidia is also working on support for the RTX 2000 line, but there is no official release date yet. It remains unclear whether the company plans to make its professional workstation cards compatible with VSR. The release of the new driver is expected to benefit users with RTX 30 and 40 series video cards, as it allows them to enjoy enhanced video quality on a variety of streaming services.

Q: Why do I need to enable High Performance on Chrome/Edge?
A: RTX Video Super Resolution requires that your browser access your RTX GPU to enhance video playback

Q: How will enabling High Performance on my browser affect battery life?
A: When your browser is configured to use High Performance graphics, your GPU will become active when the application has been launched and draw additional power. This may affect your battery life, even if RTX Video Super Resolution is not active.

Q: How can I enjoy RTX Video Super Resolution when I need it, and long battery life when I don’t?
A: We find most users prefer either Chrome or Edge. We recommend using your less commonly used browser for playing video, and leaving your preferred browser on low power mode. This way your GPU will not use extra power for web browsing activities.

Q: If I have a laptop with Optimus technology, will RTX Video Super Resolution work on my native laptop display? If I have a laptop with Optimus technology, will RTX Video Super Resolution work on my external display if that display is connected to the iGPU?
A: Yes.

Q: RTX Video Super Resolution doesn’t enhance my video when I’m on battery, even though my browser is set for “High Performance”
A: Browsers will automatically use the lower power native upscaler if on battery power is detected. This is to ensure longer life while on battery.

To start using VSR, users need to have an Ampere or ADA GPU based video card (desktop or laptop) and install the latest browser version and driver (€531.18 WHQL). Users can then select the desired quality in the Nvidia Control Panel under the Video tab and check the RTX Video box. The default level is supported by all of the above GPUs, whereas Level four requires a more powerful GPU.
