Nvidia releases Android 9 upgrade for Shield TV
Nvidia is updating their Shield Software Experience towards revision 8.0, and that means an upgrade to Android 9. It is the fourth upgrade for the set-top box that was released in 2015 and probably is the longest supported Android product series ever.
The new software version includes an improved Settings menu and setting the box as a new device should be easier because account data and saved Wi-Fi passwords can be transferred from another Android device.
Upgrade 8.0 also delivers several enthusiast-level features. For HDR TV owners, a new feature called Match Content Color Space can automatically switch your display mode to deliver more accurate colors whether you’re browsing the home screen or watching your favorite movie in HDR. Alongside the operating system upgrade, SHIELD users will start seeing live TV and a new user interface from Hulu. The new Hulu app — which already offers access to thousands of shows, movies and Hulu Originals — now offers live TV with more than 60 top channels, including local sports and news. The update started today and will be completed in the coming weeks, just in time before the college and pro football seasons kick off.
Some of the most popular apps on SHIELD have been upgraded. The latest Netflix update enables sound quality that rivals professional recording studios in the form of Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound for audio up to 640 kbps. Stranger Things 3 never sounded so good!
Prime Video recently received a 4K cast upgrade, letting you cast your favorite Prime Video movies or TV shows from your phone to SHIELD in up to 4K resolution. And a recent update to Twitch includes a fully revamped UI, improved navigation and the ability to interact with your favorite streamer with an onscreen keyboard.

For the money it's easily one of the best purchases I've ever made. It does everything I need it to do, and it does it well.

Definitely the best streaming device. I've used consoles, Roku, Amazon Fire, Chromecast, and others and still prefer the Shield over all of them. It's silent like the smaller streaming devices, but still has a capable UI / gaming controller with a headphone jack. Game streaming from my PC to the Shield works surprisingly well over both wired and wireless connections (even when separated by two floors).
The new color space feature sounds interesting. I'll have to test it out and see if it makes any noticeable difference.
