NVIDIA Re-Enables LHR On Its Graphics Cards With New Driver

NVIDIA Re-Enables LHR On Its Graphics Cards With New Driver

As it seems the new NVIDIA driver, 512.95, re-enables the mining limiting (LHR Lite Hash Rate) on RTX 30 graphics cards. By installing the new driver, all Windows-based mining software will return to the original hash rate, which is typically 50 to 70% depending on the algorithm and software.

While an interesting move,m we need tor to realize ... miners whon;t care as they can simply install the older  512.77 driver, which predates the latter and completely unlocks LHR.  NVIDIA's Lite Hash Rate technology attempts to discourage miners from purchasing their devices. Unfortunately, the crypto mining community swiftly cracked the LHR lock by 70%, over a year and a half after the first LHR cards were launched. The full LHR unlock, on the other hand, has only been available for a few weeks.

In a nutshell, installing these graphics drivers reduces mining performance by nearly half, with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 LHR going from mining 46 MH/s in Ethereum to 25 MH/s.

They don't manufacture a card for LHR, it's just a bios update.

Probably just testing it out for the new cards.
Some times even saving few dimes by not soldering display ports too on the mining ones .

The only people that are punished by this are gamers who want to mine in their free time. Why would miners update their drivers? So dumb.

It's new card sales Nvidia are trying to control. Nvidia just need to up the revision by 1 in the hardware (a trivial change) so they only work with the latest driver or newer to prevent the bypass. They can probably get away with doing this silently without having to announce a new card. It means miners wanting to buy a shipping container of new cards will still not be sure that they can bypass the LHR.

Hopefully, RTX 4000 cards will be more resilient to LHR hacks, so normal people can buy them.

People, remember "serious" miners will use custom OS, custom card BIOS/firmware and custom or at least cherry picked drivers.
As someone said before, this is just a PR stunt and only hurts casual miners that didn't buy their gpus for that.

It's not that simple - you can't use custom bios/drivers as they are locked down - the card does a standard encription check and will simply refuse to run if your bios/drivers encription key doesn't match. Unless someone successfully hacks it of course which quite possibly will happen, but no guarantees it will happen fast.
