NVIDIA Ray-Tracing coming to the Vulkan API

NVIDIA Ray-Tracing coming to the Vulkan API

Ray-Tracing certainly has become a trendy thing to talk about in the year 2018, though we're still years away for the real thing as GPUs simple are not powerful enough unless you have to say three Voltas do the workload. Slowly but steadily though there is software adoption and integration. And herein a new fact is to be found.

Ray tracing, in specific Nvidia RTX ray-tracing, is making a way into game engines pretty much like the early stages of Physx. Meanwhile, Microsoft added the DirectX Raytracing API for D3D12, but now NVIDIA seems to be working on embedding their tech into Vulkan. Phoronix reports that NVIDIA has been working on exposing their RTX ray-tracing tech through Vulkan via a VK_NV_raytracing extension that fits with the Vulkan API well.

NVIDIA has offered this ray-tracing API design to The Khronos Group as they work towards a multi-vendor standardization for ray-tracing with Vulkan.  If you are interested in their approach to ray-tracing with Vulkan, a presentation from this year's GPU Technology Conference is now available.

It was always a goal of Nvidia's to make real-time RT a reality in games. For me, it's no coincidence that they'd be the company to lead the way. It's amazing to think that RT will be just another menu option in games in years to come.

A bit off topic but i wish all developers will start making use of vulkan rather than directx as it's much better and support for many more operating systems including linux etc

vulkan cover just the graphic, directX offer them a better all around support for everything ( audio, inputs, whatever else ).

Nice to see an apparently open and positive move by NVidia for a change in releasing it through Vulkan :)

Oh, suddenly nVidia cares abour open source when it suits them? Well, too late, AMD already have an open source Vulkan ray tracing solution.
