NVIDIA on Tomb Raider performance issues

NVIDIA made a small statement that acknowledges the performance issues of Tomb Raider on GeForce graphics cards. The new Tomb Raider game is an AMD Gaming Evolved title, and NVIDIA claims it didn't receive the final game code of Tomb Raider until this past weekend. NVIDIA is working on driver optimizations to enhance performance, but adds that Crystal Dynamics will have to make some code changes as well to fix all issues on GeForce GPUs.

We are aware of performance and stability issues with GeForce GPUs running Tomb Raider with maximum settings. Unfortunately, NVIDIA didn’t receive final game code until this past weekend which substantially decreased stability, image quality and performance over a build we were previously provided. We are working closely with Crystal Dynamics to address and resolve all game issues as quickly as possible.

Please be advised that these issues cannot be completely resolved by an NVIDIA driver. The developer will need to make code changes on their end to fix the issues on GeForce GPUs as well. As a result, we recommend you do not test Tomb Raider until all of the above issues have been resolved.

In the meantime, we would like to apologize to GeForce users that are not able to have a great experience playing Tomb Raider, as they have come to expect with all of their favorite PC games.

Meanwhile a new patch hopes to fix a number of these issues.

The main improvements are of the stability variety with Crystal Dynamics focussing on the “stability and startup issues on machines that have both Intel and NVIDIA graphics hardware” but there are also numerous crash fixes.

While not essential to having a good time while playing, the improvements to TressFX should be welcome by all friends of follicles.

Here’s the full list of changes lifted from the Steam patch notes:

  • Addressed some stability and startup issues on machines that have both Intel and NVIDIA graphics hardware.
  • Fix for players being unable to progress related to the boat in the beach area.
  • Some fixes for crashes on startup and when selecting Options.
  • Some small improvements to TressFX hair rendering.
  • Fixes for various graphics glitches, including certain effects not being visible in fullscreen mode.
  • Fixed a problem that caused some users to not be able to use exclusive fullscreen.
  • Added support for separate mouse/gamepad inversion for aiming, as well as support for x-axis inversion.
  • Fixes related to the benchmark scene and benchmark mode.
  • Various other small fixes.

This particular patch should automatically apply the next time you boot the game.

This sounds pretty bad, but Nvidia is hardly to blame. If they couldn't get the game code it's hard to optimize the drivers.
While I wait for this game to hit the "great deal" section on steam, it'll hopefully get patched and the nvidia driver will also improve the performance. ;)

Lol, how many times do you think AMD got the latest game code?
AMD never bitched.

The fact that nVidia is making this big hoohaa shows that they're defending their piss poor Compute performance. STOP defending them.
Be glad that they getting some bad press. Competition is good.

Just wish PhysX would become open or die.
nVdia IMO is just as much as a spin doctor compared to Apple.

Titan didn't kill in anything, they traded blows -- and the 7970GE actually has 13% more compute power total despite it being more than half the price.

And yeah, obviously having the fastest card is an effective advertisement. Doesn't change the fact that the affordable Nvidia cards are gimped in Compute and the experience of games suffers due to it. Or the fact that you simply lied about ATi's position in 2006 for no reason.

-deleted- Ill just let the AMD fan boys go on spouting BS. whatever.

AMD has complained loudly in the past. Neither company has any special status. Both are engaged in a cut throat business with all the trappings that go along with that. re: AMD accuses former top employees of stealing over 100,000 documents
