Nvidia AD106, A107 Ada Lovelace GPUs Likely to use PCIe x8 Interface

The GeForce RTX 4060 (AD106) purportedly achieves a TimeSpy Extreme score of 7,000 points, according to a tweet by resident GPU leaker Kopite7kimi. If correct, the GeForce RTX 4060's performance would fall between the RTX 3060 Ti and the RTX 3070. In addition, Kopite7kimi pointed out that Nvidia's AD106 and the more affordable AD107 dies will only have eight PCIe lanes instead of 16.



It's the first time we've heard from a TimeSpy Extreme performance statistic for Nvidia's RTX 40-series (Ada Lovelace) GPUs from a hardware leaker. The AD106 might power the next-generation RTX 4060 and even the RTX 4050 Ti (if Nvidia makes one this time).

It would put the AD106 die, or rather the RTX 4060, on par with GPUs like the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070, which isn't a bad thing. The RTX 4060 looks to be a nice boost over the RTX 3060 based only on TimeSpy Extreme. But that's the problem: we only have purported TimeSpy Extreme results on a GPU that hasn't yet been released. As usual, take this information with a grain of salt. However, if history repeats itself, the RTX 4060's predicted performance seems to be fairly accurate.

PCIe Lane Restrictions
The reports that the AD106 and AD107 would be nerfed to eight PCIe lanes instead of the customary 16 are perhaps the most fascinating portion of the Tweet. We doubt there will be an issue on recent devices if Nvidia uses PCIe 4.0 instead of PCIe 5.0. For example, a PCIe 4.0 x8 setup for an RTX 4050 or RTX 4060 should be sufficient and give enough bandwidth for PCIe demanding workloads. After all, PCIe 4.0 x8 has the same bandwidth as PCIe 3.0 x16, and the RTX 2080 Ti - the final GPU to support PCIe 3.0 - worked well on a PCIe 3.0 x16 interface. The one possible disadvantage of PCIe 4.0 x8 is that older systems are only capable of PCIe 3.0 speeds. As a result, PCIe 4.0 x8 GPUs will be forced to switch to PCIe 3.0 x8, which is substantially slower.
