Next-Gen Intel Laptop Processors to pass 5 GHz on its Turbo

Next-Gen Intel Laptop Processors to pass 5 GHz on its Turbo

Over in Las Vegas at CES Intel gave a workshop detailing some next-generation products, with a main focus on the laptop platform. The upcoming new and high-end laptops will get processors that pass 5 GHz on its Boost clock frequency.

Comet Lake-H is thus what we're talking about and should new launch soon - but not at CES 2020, think more February announcements with later this year say Q3 releases. Intel will even offer eight and ten cores for the mobile platform, with eight cores at that suggested boost of 5 GHz. These are probably again 45-watt chips that can usually be found in 15-inch laptops. According to the chip manufacturer, the Core i7s will work at up to 5 GHz, with Core i9s that will be even faster.

So to reiterate, under certain boost conditions, the Core i7 10th Gen H Series will peak ~5GHz, with the Core i9 variants going a notch higher. Intel did not specify how many cores would be able to hit that boost clock, under what conditions or how long it will stay at that frequency. Intel thus far shared nothing on desktop processors, but there is a press conference planned, hours after the AMD one.

I'm confused, does this mean there will be two sets of laptops, ones with icelake, low power, high IPC but lower frenquencies and then also Cometlake, with higher power, lower IPC and higher frequencies?

This is beginning to feel like deja vu, all over again. Remember the days of the Pentium 4 when Intel trumpeted that clockrate was everything so forget about IPC?

It sure seems like that to me.

5GHz 8-core at 45 watts sounds quite good. I was going to ask here what kind of battery life would a 5GHz laptop enjoy, but if it's just 45W, it's surprisingly reasonable, of course depending on the GPU as well.

45w is before boost.
