Netgear is expanding its WiFi 6 range of mesh WiFi-enabled network devices with a WiFi 6 mesh WiFi system from the Nighthawk series, the new Nighthawk AX6 AX5400 WiFi 6 router (RAX50) and the AX1800 WiFi 6 mesh extender (EAX20).

The Nighthawk WiFi 6 Mesh WiFi system is available with one or two satellites, whereby additional satellites can be added later. It is set up via the free Nighthawk app for Android and iOS, which is then also used to manage the network.

Each router or satellite of the new Nighthawk WiFi 6 Mesh WiFi system supports dual-band WiFi with up to 1.8 Gbit / s in total from both frequency bands. That’s significantly less than what Netgear WiFi 6 solutions already offer. The AX8 RAX80 theoretically enables up to 6.4 Gbit / s via 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency for comparison, the AX12 RAX200 even 10.8 Gbit / s. The Nighthawk AX4 dual-band router, on the other hand, achieves maximum transmission bandwidths of theoretically 3 Gbit / s via 4 × 4 MU-MIMO. In practice, they are always significantly lower. But the setup is cheaper and a set of router and satellite (MK62) costs only 229 euros, while the Nighthawk AX4 alone should cost 195 euros. Netgear has not yet announced a price for the set consisting of a router and two satellites (MK63).

The Nighthawk AX6 AX5400 makes use of a 1.5 GHz triple-core processor, which is supposed to increase the performance in the network by lower utilization. It supports OFDMA WiFi-6 technologies, 160 MHz channel width and 1024 QAM. Antenna amplifiers should increase the WLAN range. Also designed as a dual-band model, the router theoretically supports a total transmission rate of up to 5.4 Gbit / s over 2.4 and 5 GHz. While over 2.4 GHz 600 Mbit / s are possible, over 5 GHz with 4 × 4 up to 4.8 Gbit / s can be achieved. The Nighthawk AX6 also offers a USB 3.0 port and five gigabit LAN connections (WAN and 4 × LAN).

Netgear AX1800 4-Stream WiFi 6-Mesh Extender (EAX20)

A new WiFi 6 mesh extender (EAX20) is intended to increase the range of the WLAN and supports speeds of up to 1.8 Gbit / s (600 Mbit / s over 2.4 GHz and up to 1.2 Gbit / s) over 5 GHz). In order to be able to also connect stationary devices and integrate them into the WLAN, it also has four Gigabit LAN connections. The EAX20 uses a 1.5 GHz fast dual-core processor and supports WLAN roaming according to 802.11k.
