MSI: Radeon RX Vega needs a lot of power
Over at some Dutch forums MSI Marketing Director Eric Van Beurden made a bit of a slip of the tongue. In a reaction (written in Dutch) he commented on the specs of the consumer edition(s) Radeon RX Vega.
So he wrote this :
I'm Dutch, my translation would be spot on. He states, I've seen the Radeon RX VEGA specifications, "dang that product needs power". He then states that MSI is working on the card and a launch is pending (which is a bit of an open door alright). He does not mention any detailed specs though.
But board partners thus ARE working actively on Vega and well, we already know that these cards sit in the 250~300 Watt board power region. Perhaps higher?

Performance/per money is always on AMD side. I don't agree with "forced to go to nVidia" :S No offense but really, how is anyone forced? You wanted the fastest card, that was nVidia. You got one. But there are users that don't need that and can choose. Most people actually.

The history repeats itself. AMD/ATI is way back from Nvidia in terms of performance/ power draw/ heat. Is it the "samsung's low performance and low quality GPU chips" , or is it the "AMD's card design engineers" , or both reasons? Anyways what is happening is always bad for customers who are forced to go with Nvidia, because of the performance/ power draw/ heat differences between AMD/Nvidia.
How exactly are they way far back? Epyc and Vega are both extremely competetive with Intel and Nvidias products that cost SEVERAL TIMES more.

I love what Ryzen is offering in the CPU market but it's far from the truth that AMD are offering massively better perf/$ on the GPU side. Besides the 480/580 beating the 1060 for perf/$ in most new titles, it comes with the caveat that it's only a little cheaper (and for the massive back catalogue of DX11 games the 1060 would be better). For every other GPU, it's a case of AMD offering a cheaper alternative that offers a corresponding decrease in performance. 560 is a bit cheaper than 1050? It's a good bit worse too. 570 is better than a 1050ti? Yeah, and it's about the same amount more expensive. What you've basically got between AMD and Nvidia is a complete product line with different offerings to cover all performance and price level - there's no clear 1060 performance for 1050 price winner.
Will vega offer 1080ti performance for 1080 price? That definitely remains to be seen.
