A team of modders, spearheaded by Paulo Gomes on his YouTube channel, has remarkably transformed an AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT by doubling its memory capacity to 12 GB. 

The modder replaced the original 1GB 14Gbps memory modules with 2GB 16Gbps modules, which necessitated multiple attempts to perfect. They developed a custom BIOS to harness the expanded memory, and the revamped GPU was assessed using the Superposition benchmark, where it utilized over 10 GB of memory and scored more than double the original GPU's results.

Additionally, the team evaluated the modified Radeon RX 5600 XT using Resident Evil 4, with the game's graphics settings maxed out. The original GPU faced difficulties with hefty textures due to its 6 GB of VRAM; however, with 12 GB, the game consistently ran smoothly above 60 FPS. This test proves the 12GB GPU's capability to manage memory-intensive games, such as Capcom's Resident Evil 4.

A similar modification was carried out on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, which originally possessed 8 GB of memory but was upgraded to 16 GB through the mod. This enhancement resolved the bottleneck issue in memory-intensive games like The Last of Us Part I.

Although graphics card modding may not be suitable for everyone, these instances demonstrate its potential for boosting gaming performance. This also prompts the question of whether GPU manufacturers should consider releasing higher memory variants of their products from the outset.
