Microsoft thinks there might not be new console generations

Microsoft thinks there might not be new console generations

Engadget sat down with Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft's head of Xbox games marketing, to talk about Xbox One, Project Scorpio and the future of console gaming.

"The future of Xbox looks a lot like PC gaming." That's what Engadget editor Nathan Ingraham wrote after speaking with Phil Spencer earlier this year. Spencer spoke about wanting to see a steady stream of hardware innovation rather than seven-year gaps between consoles, citing the smartphone market as inspiration. Greenberg went one step further. In his opinion, this is the last console generation. "We think the future is without console generations," he said, explaining that Project Scorpio was a "big bet" that gamers will embrace that notion.

Q: The Xbox platform has moved forward to have such regular updates and new features coming all the time. It kind of seems like hardware is going the same way. There was a very short gap between the Xbox One and the Xbox One S, and we're probably talking an even shorter gap before Project Scorpio. Do you see a future of console upgrades continually happening? Is this the last console generation?

Greenberg: I think it is. ... For us, we think the future is without console generations; we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware -- we're making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We're basically saying, "This isn't a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works." We think of this as a family of devices.

I'm fine with a cyclical cycle. Bump out the lowest generation every other new one. Maintain compatibility=maintain huge backlog of playable games.
But without the hassle of PC gaming. Honestly I think that's the right way to go. It probably won't be that often though, look at the GCN and the Original Xbox 1. They both only lasted less than 5 years before being replaced. The 360 overstayed it's welcome.

That does create the problem of, what do you do with all the old ones that not many people will want?

And, when will you stop with the ****ty mechanical slow RPM HDD bottleneck? (If developers could effectively stream stuff better, they wouldn't have to waste RAM by over caching data into it when they could be using it for other stuff. Also: Stop with the esram nonsense)
What's take to get a better CPU?

For that matter;
Why can't Microsoft learn to make a coherent UI that isn't based around advertising? I can't stand their ****. They took a great UI for the 360 and slowly thrashed it into the gutter, making it worse with each iteration. The first UI change wasn't so bad. But nope to the nope after that.

The PS3 XMB only needed some revision and major customization to really make it work perfect. But Sony messed that up too, the PS4 UI is an unbearably cluttered eye sore with pathetic user customization and lack of basic user organization.

Nintendo seems to be the only one who gets it right. The Wii U and 3DS UI are basically perfect.

I think what MS needs to do to make upgradeable consoles a success they should start with making the Hard drive upgradeable like Sony rather than relying on an external HDD for games. Do that with Project Scorpio. MS doesn not speak for Sony and Nintendo. If Code name NX is a flop like the Wii-U then MS might be right about no more consoles from Nintendo but if Code Name NX is a success then we might see more consoles from Nintendo. Sony however might have the same thinking mentality as MS though.
