As of January 31, 2023, Microsoft will officially remove Windows 10 from its digital storefront in an effort to promote its latest operating system, Windows 11.

However, third-party retailers may continue to sell the product keys even after the expiration date. Despite Microsoft's push for Windows 11 as the superior product, the decision to discontinue Windows 10 may cause problems for some users. Due to Windows 11's heightened security requirements, many older PCs may not be compatible, leaving those users without a viable operating system.

“An update was made to the Windows 10 product page to ensure customers have the latest information on purchasing options for Windows 10,” says Amy Bartlow, Windows marketing director. “Customers have until January 31, 2023 to purchase Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro from this site.”

This could also cause issues for medium to large-scale businesses who may need to invest in new hardware in order to upgrade to Windows 11. However, many systems currently using Windows 10 are eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11, making it an opportune time for users to consider a clean install.

Windows 10 was first released by Microsoft in July 2015, with an emphasis on user feedback and rapid iteration. The OS was released after Windows 8, which received widespread backlash for ditching the Start menu and button in favor of an all-touch interface. Windows 10 was also the first Windows version to be updated automatically, managed like a service.
