Microsoft Fall 2020 Windows 10 Update will Push Edge Browser as Default Option

Microsoft does not seem to learn about browser choices, even after many fines from the EU. Microsoft announced Windows 10 20H2, the update that will be released in the second half of 2020.

The company confirms that the November 2019 Update merely brings small performance and quality improvements. The update also includes the new chromium-based Edge browser as a new default. So starting at update 20H2, Microsoft will be pushing the browser with that OS update, making it a default option in the OS.

And therein is an issue to be found, as Microsoft will do everything they can to get you working on that browser. Anyone who updates the update to 20H2 will automatically get the Edge on Chromium browser enforced installed upon them. Microsoft has already started the phased distribution of Edge on Chromium to Windows 10 users, Microsoft mentions in its blog.

Also changed is the numerical version naming.

With this release, we will also simplify our approach to numerical versions for Windows and move to a format that represents the half of the calendar year in which the release becomes available in retail and commercial channels. Windows 10, version 20H2 is, therefore, “20H2” because it will be released in the second half of the 2020 calendar year. This is a familiar approach for our Windows Insiders and is designed to provide consistency in our version names across releases for our commercial customers and partners. (Note: We will continue to use a friendly name, such as the May 2020 Update, in consumer communications.)
