Microsoft could be ending Edge browsers, to be replaced with Chromium alternative

It seems Microsoft might be ditching Edge, Microsoft is working on a new browser, based on Chromium. Microsoft is working internally to convert the main browser in Windows 10 to the Chromium engine, which is used among others in Google's Chrome browser, but also in Opera and Vivaldi.
Windows Central learned this from Microsoft. There are not many details yet. For example, it is not known whether the future default browser in Windows 10 will be called Edge or will be renamed as the rendering engine changes.
It is expected that the new Microsoft browser will be released in the first half of 2019 - probably with a corresponding Windows 10 update. The edge browser has never enjoyed great popularity. At first, the browser was notable for its lack of features, which should be a matter of course for modern browsers. But sometimes it takes several months for standard functions to be integrated into the browser. First and foremost, edge users complain about a lack of stability and low browser speed.
So far, Microsoft has not officially confirmed the move to Chromium. It is expected that Microsoft will officially announce the plan in the coming weeks.

The main problem with Edge is that it never improved it fast enough to compete with other browsers. In the nascent stages of Windows 10, the slow pace of iteration caused irreversible damage to Edge's credibility as it was too unstable and buggy to be used as a primary browser for a long time. While other browsers are updated on a routine basis via a browser update function, Edge is only updated along with the OS itself which is ridiculous in the modern era. Combine that with lower than expected web page compatibility due to Chrome's dominance, and it's a tough pill to swallow.
Personally though I still use Edge as my main browser on desktop, because it's not from Google. I already use Chrome on my Pixel 3 XL, so that's enough data mining for me. Despite its shortcomings though, Edge has improved greatly over the years and offers comparable performance, stability, security and feature set as Google Chrome. In fact, I would say that Edge has the best hardware acceleration of any browser out now. The main problem for Edge currently is web compatibility rather than performance and stability, so switching to Chromium for the renderer would certainly improve things greatly on that front.
This is a good move for Microsoft!

they fixed it couple of years ago ? so it took em 3-4 years to fix it (either if that was nvidia's fault or mozila's ) it is a long time to fix such a serious issue , although to be honest i remember i was not that keen to change firefox but right now i do not remember how firefox was looking and i do not even remember that status bar to be honest

i m a web developer since long.
Chromium ( blink engine ) and Firefox ( webkit engine now ) and chromium derivates are all more than fast now.
And the UI is a matter of preferences, you should not consider one inferior or superior.
Chrome introduces more bugs and fix others each release. They move faster less carefully.
What you really want is that modern standards are followed and security respected ( security is not privacy ).
Edge failed at the basic things you need from a web browser for a developer, so is a pain to work with. ( no headless testing, super slow with dev tools )
If it wasn't for development of chrome and firefox last 5 years, we would not have the web like we have now.
Many apps are available on linux/macos because are electron based, that is a variant of the chromium engine.
If microsoft gets out the browsers market, i m happy.

Chromium should be stripped down to its core and then privacy features need to be enabled from the start. Then Microsoft can build maybe a very great UI around the Chromium browser with their own theme. I think that would be an awesome idea.

This is the users fault, not chromes.
If a company pays another company to provide their product as an optional product while installing the first product, there is literally zero wrong with that. If a user doesn't pay attention, or care how to use their computers and install programs correctly, that's a user problem. Doesn't matter if the default to install another program within a program is defaulted to yes or not, it's the users responsibility to pay attention to what they are installing and clicking through.
This is why virus' and scams are so rampant, because users don't pay attention.
Unrelated to what i replied to though:
This news seems to be yet another example of how all anyone on this forum does anymore is complain and moan about everything.

I 100% agree; I don't think it's Chrome's fault, nor do I find it to be a fault (I'd rather people use Chrome than Edge).

What if this is just a calculated move by Microsoft to kill off IE once and for all. Have no clue why IE was ever included in Win 10 to start with. Once IE is killed off, then they will pull a Coca-Cola and bring it back all supped up; classic move.

Couldn't agree more - I hate UWP, it couldn't go any sooner... remember working for MS when it launched *barf* was the worst time ever. Thankfully a better job presented itself 6 months later...

hahaha
that kinda reminded me of my NSFW commentary with my friend the other day about the only good thing that Bing is good for - its video search feature... *cough cough*

Yeah, I had exactly the same problem (the workaround was to disable hardware acceleration in advanced settings). I can't tell you when it happened, but they fixed it a couple of years ago. I don't know if it's a fix on Nvidia's side or in Firefox. Unfortunately, the Firefox of today isn't much like the Firefox back then, though you can sorta-kinda make it look a bit like it (no status bar, though).
