Micron to release Crucial MX300 SSDs with 3d-nand this summer
Micron will be releasing a Crucial MX300 SSD series that will make use of 3D Nand (vertical stacked NAND), it is TLC written. The product will become available in 275GB up-to 2 TB volume sizes. A 750GB version would cost 199 euro.
Micron did not release any precise details about this launch on the MX300, but it is mentioned that these SSDs are TLC based. With vertically stacked NAND Mcrin can reach 32-layers of memory cells (384 Gbit) which is 48 GB per IC used.
According to a Spanish website, Chapuzas Informático, the 2.5" models will become available in 275GB, 525GB, 750GB and 1TB selling starting 19th of July. On August 15th a 2TB model wil follow.According to the website there will also be m2 models, but just a 750GB version in July and then later on in august the 525 and 1050GB models. Performance wise you are looking at the usual 530 MB/s for reads and 510MB/writes with IOPS values in the 83K and 92K. It is mentioned that the SSDs would get an endurance of 220TBG written (but that would depend highly on the volume size).
The 750 GB m2 model would cost just under 200 euro as well. We are looking at roughly 27 cents per GB with this release with street prices likely a notch lower.
Micron is also to release Micron 7100- en 9100-series nvme SSDs. The 9100 series will get capacities from 800 up-to 3.2TB at 3GB/s reads and 2 GB/s writes with an amazing 750K IOPS (random 4K read) and 160K IOPS on writes.

So wait, is this actually an implementation of 3d Xpoint? They didn't reference this name, or at least, it wasn't mentioned in this post by Hilbert..

750GB for €200 WOW!
I remember buying a 200GB for over €600 a few years ago - getting economical enough to start getting rid of spinning platters for smaller drives now in machine forever (still need the big eco-green ones for large scale storage).

Nah, I'm pretty sure all 3D Xpoint stuff is being sold under the "Optane" brand name. It also appears to use a DDR4 slot -- still seems to be a mystery at what it's being used for. Some articles say graphics, other articles say its a memory replacement, other articles say it will be used in VR, other articles say all of the above.
Micron was working on 3D TLC separately to XPoint though, which is what this seems to be.

well, Optane, from what I have read is not only an upcoming storage item (SSD, whether SATA or PCI-E) but its also going to be a DIMM.. these will be two entirely separate products.
I'm not sure why anyone would go with this Micron offering when Optane, from early demos, have shown its superiority not only with speeds, but also with much larger capacities.
Now, likely it will cost a mint, but for people who want a true and significant upgrade from today's 500/500 SSDs, this would be it.

Same speeds, higher durability. I'm in. Let's see how Samsung reacts... and let's see if there's a BX300 that isn't as bad as the BX200 and is at least as good as the BX100.
