Micron keeps on advancing with their GDDR5X graphics memory ICs, they have now reached 16 Gbps which makes the memory incredibly fast and competitive to even HBM2, they also announced availability of GDDR6 memory by next year.

On its website Micron posted a bit of a blog post showing that in their controlled environments they now have reached 16 Gbps. Now that does not mean we'll see the new version fast as there is a long QA and validation process to be followed before we'll see the memory being fitted onto graphics cards. Currently the fastest ICs are rated 11 Gbps as you have seen on the recent 1080 for example.

Next to the GDDR5X progress the company also announced that GDDR6, the successor to GDDR5 will be going into mass production at the beginning of next year. Ralative to GDDR5X, GDDR6 has even more potential as the performance could be nearly the same while capacity can be brought upwards.
