MediaTek announced a new mid-range SoC, fabbed at a 12-nanometer FinFET process by TSMC. The Helio P22 will actually be the first mid-range chip produced at 12 nm.

The MediaTek Helio allows for a 20:9 ratio HD+ (1600 x 720) resolution displays that offer a balance between sharpness and power-efficiency. This is backed by a new IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU running up to a speedy 650MHz, and powerful octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU operating up to 2.0GHz. With its flexible LPDDR3/LPDDR4x memory controller, device manufacturers can easily choose to meet market needs and by balancing price and performance. MediaTek uses the latest TSMC 12nm FinFET production process; a significant generational upgrade for mainstream devices that delivers all the MediaTek Helio P22’s advanced features and awesome experiences while ensuring a new bar in long battery-life smartphones. MediaTek’s Imagiq suite in the MediaTek Helio P22 allows up to a 13+8MP dual camera system that’s backed by a new hardware depth engine. This enables a dual-camera smartphone that can capture professional-grade Depth of Field (Bokeh) effects in stunning photos. A single camera mode of up to 21MP with simulated bokeh effects is supported also.

MediaTek’s Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) has been upgraded with a new Rolling Shutter Compensation (RSC) engine, which now combined, cleverly mitigates warped (‘jello effect’) video when capturing fast action or panning. In-line with the existing MediaTek Helio P series, the new P22 has incredible low-light performance, multi-frame noise reduction and a clear-image zoom technology. Further, the Imagiq capture suite includes enhancements that automatically minimize aliasing, grain, and provides defect/distortion correction techniques. 3A includes MediaTek’s Instant Auto Exposure (AE): anti-over exposure hardware with accurate point focusing. The Instant AE is powered by a hardware Camera Control Unit (CCU) that delivers considerably faster focusing exposure adjustment when environmental lighting conditions change suddenly. Light AI-enhancements such as Face ID (Face Unlock), Smart Photo Album, and Single-Cam/Dual-Cam Bokeh bring new experiences to mainstream smartphones. With MediaTek NeuroPilot support, developers and device makers have the best possible ecosystem that supports many common AI frameworks, and full compliance with Android Neural Networks API (Android NNAPI). Backed by all these technologies the MediaTek Helio P22 captures rich details and exciting effects in both photography and video, any time you need it.

MediaTek’s latest generation 4G LTE WorldMode modem bringing dual 4G SIM support with VoLTE/ViLTE to affordable yet capable Android devices, such as the MediaTek Helio P22. It focuses on a highly power-efficient design capable of either Cat-7 or Cat-4 (DL) speeds, while TAS 2.0 smart antenna technology further adds to MediaTek’s sustained performance and user experience goals by using the best antenna combination to provide optimal signal quality at lowest power use. For the North American market, the new 600MHz band is also supported. Connectivity upgrades from the previous generation include multi-GNSS options (GPS, Glonass, Beidou, Galileo) with core-enhancements providing 57% improvement in Hot TTFF, 10% accuracy improvement and up to 24% lower power operation thanks to a new, dedicated sub-processor. For the latest Smart Home devices, Bluetooth 5 is available sporting up to 2X speeds and 4X range and 8X broadcast capacity over the previous generation. BT and Wi-Fi (now 802.11ac) simultaneous co-existence can provide up to 5X Wi-Fi throughput boost over the previous generation.
