Loongson enters the GPU-integrated processor industry.

Chinese processor manufacturer, Loongson, has announced its entry into the GPU market with the Loongson LS2K2000 SoC, which is based on the company's proprietary microarchitecture, called LoongArch. This will be the first processor to feature a dedicated GPU or iGPU.



The Loongson LS2K2000 is a basic technology compared to current offerings from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA. The SoC features two CPU cores with the LA364 proprietary architecture, 2 MB of shared L2 cache memory, and a speed of 1.5 GHz. The GPU, known as the LG120, is only equipped with a graphics core. The processor will support DDR4-2400 memory (with ECC support), PCIe 3.0, SATA 3.0, USB 3.0 and 2.0, HDMI, and other basic connections and interfaces.

One of the most notable features of the LS2K2000 is its low consumption. According to Loongson, the SoC in performance mode has a maximum peak of 9W, while in balanced mode it does not exceed 4W. This is remarkable as these consumption numbers are not even seen on mobile CPUs for ultra-thin laptops anymore. Loongson already has other CPUs released, such as the LS3A5000, which was launched in 2021. This processor is manufactured in 12nm and is a quad-core operating between 2.30 to 2.50 GHz. Each core has four ALUs (Arithmetic Logic Unit) and two 256-bit vector operations units. It is based on the LoongArch GS464V architecture and comes with nearly 2,000 proprietary instructions.

The LS3A4000 has similar performance to AMD's Excavator architecture, and the new LS3A5000 should run close to AMD's first generation Ryzen CPU performance. The new CPU from the Chinese manufacturer has dynamic frequencies and voltage, as well as the ability to turn off unused parts of the processor to save power.

The Loongson 3A5000 comes with DDR4-3200 ECC RAM controllers and four HyperTransport 3.0 controllers with SMP (Symmetric Multiprocessing) support. The CPU supports the necessary Chinese ciphers such as SM2, SM3, and SM4 through hardware. So far, three compilers (GCC, LLVM, and Golang) and three virtual machines (Java, JavaScript, and NET) have been developed for the CPU.

There is currently no release date announced for the new Loongson LS2K2000 SoC.
