LG Announces 29 Inch Ultra-wide 29UC97 Curved model

LG adds a slightly smaller 29 Inch Ultra-wide 29UC97 Curved model to their lineup. The new ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio model is 29" in size and has a smaller 2560 x 1080 resolution.

The screen AH-IPS panel offers a 5ms G2G response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 178/178 viewing angles, 60Hz refresh rate and 16.7m colour depth.

The monitor uses a flicker free W-LED backlight and offers an sRGB colour gamut (100% coverage quoted). The monitor also comes factory and can be hardware-calibrated using a compatible colorimeter. There are DisplayPort 1.2, 2x HDMI 1.4, 2x ThunderBolt and 2x USB 3.0 ports provided on the display. There are also 2x 7W Maxx audio stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

There is no word just yet on price or availability.

No DisplayPort 1.2a is a missed chance.

I really do not understand the hype about curved screens.

And honestly I think they are just a marketing gimmick, nothing more.
I began my PC-life with Amiga 500 and its 8-10(?) Inches CRT screen sometime in 1989, so managed to witness some big part of Display evolution thorough these years.
I remember screens going flat on vertical axis, I remember the horizontal curvature becoming more flat... then I remember the late 90s overly-enthusiastic claims of how curved (outwards, relative to light source) CRT screens are unnatural, and how flat LCD screens are the cure for cancer…
…some 10 years later we are again fed with this screens nonsense… but this time mainly with the idea that curved (inwards) screens are super-duper natural.
BS, I say. There’s nothing natural in these screens, our eyes are not created (or more accustomed) to better see\percept inwardly curved images (actually quite the opposite, considering the structure of an eye…)

Returning to the main post... As a display it is quite nice… though nothing special.

On TVs, I agree. Because you would have to sit within the width of the TV and at a much closer distance to benefit from any claimed advantages. But on large 21:9 computer screens, there should be an understandable benefit. Say you are 18-24" away from a non-curved 34" 21:9 screen, you would be looking at the far edges at a terrible angle, because its extra-wide. But with a slight curve, it would more or less 'correct' the viewing angle at the edges. This my opinion only with regard to large (34" or above) displays. Smaller sizes, ie 29" the benefit of curved screens would be diminished or gone.

Curved screen would be great to counteract color shifting for TN panels. So they use IPS only.

Gsync/Freesync would be great to eliminate the much more visible tearing on 60Hz panels. So they have it almost exclusive to 120/144Hz panels.

GGWP monitor industry.

Gotta milk customers dry it seems.
