Large part of Playstation 5 SSD storage may not be used for installation of games

Large part of Playstation 5 SSD storage may not be used for installation of games

it's been the topic of a lot of discussions, the ultra-fast storage unit for Playstation 5. We know it'll be 825GB and can reach  5.5 GB/sec data rates, however, what Sony di not share is how much pf the storage volume is actually accessible for storage of games.

Via website Imgur pictures appeared of a PS5 menu. The images are very blurry and very well could be be manipulated. The images in Russian show what is left of the 825 GB for your games. The 825 GB SSD storage memory translates to 768 'real' GB in the OS. Subsequently, the OS saves a part of it, and space is reserved for features such as a quick resume.

This all adds up to about 108 GB, leaving about 660 GB all in all to install your games.

In practice, you will not be able to have too many games installed at the same time, with installation sizes of 50 GB or more per game these days. However, it is possible to expand the storage capacity of the PS5 with a compatible m2 NVME SSD. November 19 is when you can purchase the unit for € 499 (with Blu-ray reader) and € 399 (without Blu-ray reader).

It looks like most of them are around 40-60GB max, actually. The newer the games are, the less duplication will be needed. The new Spiderman is only 40GB because of this.

The problem is the "cost" IF cost of SSD and now NVMe were same as HDD or hell with in cent or 2 of HDD cost per gb, HDD would been phased out by now,

IMO switching from HDD to SSD for every day use " OS" wise is best upgrade one can do. but cost is still to high. I might love my all SSD system but cost is not appealing. I payed 150$ back when I got Samsung 820 128 gb years how many years go? and I payed $105 for 1TB Samsung 860 evo a year and half ago with how big things are getting to install have speed at cost of space and pay huge premium for those speed is not good bargin in my eyes

Devs might be able to "reduce" space requirements with DX12U stuff but that will in turn give them MORE room to play with which in turn will just make stuff bigger again
Remember the PS360 generation drove down the price of 2.5" HDD's. THe same could happen because of this gen. I still remember the 20GB original 360 HDD being $100.
